Klondike Bar Semi-Blind Taste Test

July 9, 2015

Variety Klondike Bar

Before we begin, a disclosure: I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Klondike. I received free product coupons to facilitate my review as well as compensation for my participation.

Now, let’s talk ice cream. Specifically, the world-famous Klondike bar. And even more specifically, what we are calling The “Klondike Bar Semi-Blind Taste Test”.

If you were ever a kid, you probably remember Klondike bars. Well, I should say Klondike BAR, because I really only remember one flavor- vanilla.

Those days are long gone. As I wandered down the ice cream aisle at the grocery store here in Boise, I was amazed at how much frozen sugar exists. And more than that, how many different types of Klondike bars exist.

Additional disclosure: I do not normally eat dessert unless it’s beer, so this was a whole new world for me. So much sweet!

Klondike now makes twelve (12!) different types of chocolate-covered bars that come in six-packs with flavors including Cookie Dough Swirl, Heath, Reese’s, Mint Chocolate Chip, Krunch, Caramel Pretzel, OREO, Dark Chocolate, Rocky Road, Double Chocolate, Neapolitan, and Original.

Beyond that, they make Klondike Kandy Bars, which are apparently a great combination of chocolate, ice cream, and candy. I say “apparently” because the store I went to did not carry this variety, so I didn’t get a chance to try them. But they come in packs of four and should cost you about $4 a pop.

The Klondike bars I chose come in six-packs, which seems like a good amount of ice cream for a family of six or more for about a week. Again, recall that I do not eat a lot of dessert so this seemed like A LOT of ice cream to me.

I decided upon four different varieties of Klondike bars: Heath, Mint Chocolate Chip, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Cookie Dough Swirl.

Talk about perfect timing.

It has been a nice, mild week in Boise. The high has only been 102, and today it got up to 90 degrees with one of the most severe thunderstorms I have ever seen. So ice cream was gladly accepted by my test subjects. Plus, it’s summer, and who doesn’t love ice cream in the summer months?

Time for the taste test.

When I was given this opportunity, I had many different ideas on how to proceed with my post, and all of them were terrible. So finally I decided that the best (and most fun) method would be to invite Meghaan, Meghaan’s mom (Marilyn), dad (Tom), uncle (Ken), and aunt (Carolyn) to a Klondike bar semi-blind taste test. Why “semi-blind”? Because I tried to convince them not to peek at that bars because I knew it would give at least one of the flavors away, but it was impossible to eat them without looking so they kinda sorta looked.

Let’s meet the participants in no particular order (images courtesy of Google):

Marilyn

Meghaan

Carolyn

Ken

Tom

The rules were simple: I would cut a Klondike bar into pieces, give everyone their sample in a bowl, and they would answer the following questions:

1) What flavor is this?

2) What are your general impressions of this flavor?

3) What score would you give this, out of 10?

They did not know which Klondike bar they were receiving in advance, but you will. Please keep in mind that I am writing what I think they wrote on their card, so pardon any typos or randomness.

ABOUT KLONDIKE

Originating in Switzerland, the Isaly family began dipping ice cream squares into milk chocolate around 1900. By the 1940’s, the family was based in Youngstown, Ohio and was supplying over 300 of their dairy stores in the region with Klondike Bars. Distribution began expanding in the 80’s and by the 90’s, they were available all over the United States.

pretty funny. I’ve only tried the mint because I love mint… but I could barely taste it in them. Didn’t know they were in Youngstown, that’s not far from me 🙂
