Prepare for Liftoff

December 18, 2014

Tonight we started our final preparations for baby Lela. The bassinet is next to the bed, the car seat adapter is in the car, the crib has a fresh sheet, and Meghaan and Lela both have their bags packed for a weekend at the hospital. The next time you hear from me, I may be a father.

How did this all happen?

I don’t mean how did Meghaan get pregnant. I know that. My mom explained all of that quite well. When I was 10. In front of all of my friends. In the library at my elementary school.

I mean, how are we already within days of having our first child?

Tonight we met our friend Barb for a beer at Loowit in Vancouver. Of course it was only water for Meghaan, although my mom, the nurse, swears Meghaan can drink now and tried to force her into a glass of wine at our last family dinner. Mind you, my mom hardly even drinks herself, so it was surprising.

The last time we met Barb, Meghaan was hardly showing and we had to tell Barb that she was pregnant. Nobody could tell. When we saw Barb we talked about our 1-year wedding anniversary, which had just happened. And our wedding seemed very recent. As did the day I proposed. And every significant day in our relationship before that.

Meghaan and I have been married for a year and a half. We have been dating for over 6 years. I still remember the day I met her, and I will never forget it.

It seems like yesterday. I feel like I am about to be saying that a lot.

Yesterday isn’t relevant now. Only tomorrow.

Tomorrow we may have a daughter. If not, the tomorrow after that. Either way, it will be soon.
