Summertime Means Summer Hats

May 28, 2015

Today I did a little work in our new garden, which is going to be quite the little adventure. The last time I tried to be a gardener, I built a box in the corner of the yard, planted some tomatoes, and proceeded to watch them die over the course of a month.

Turns out I built the box in the absolute least sunny part of the yard. But I hadn’t considered that because I had never done any gardening. So my plants died, and a little bit of me did as well.

I thought I wasn’t a gardener, and I hung up my gardener gloves for good. That part of me was dead.

Or so I thought.

Watch out gardening world, because now I’m back. And I’m not going to ruin my chance at a comeback.

I built boxes in a very sunny area, I filled them with dirt, and am about to put some things in there and watch them grow. Mostly peppers. Which now I’m thinking isn’t a great strategy because what do you make with peppers? Jalapeño salad with ancho slices and thai chili flakes? It seems like you need lettuce in there somewhere. But that’s for a chef to figure out. I’m just a gardener. I grow things.

Speaking of growing, Lela is growing and loves to come outside and watch me and her mom work. But with summer creeping in, we need to keep the sun off her face and body.

No worries. Lela has a summertime hat. Because that’s what we wear in the summertime.
